The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart, 485 pages

"'ARE YOU A GIFTED CHILD LOOKING FOR SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES?'
When this peculiar ad appears in the newspaper, dozens of children enroll to take a series of mysterious, mind-bending tests. (And you, dear reader, can test your wits right alongside them.) But in the end just four very special children will succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and resourceful children could complete. With their newfound friendship at stake, will they be able to pass the most important test of all?
WELCOME TO THE MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY."

This book was very entertaining! It reminded me of Roald Dahl's books. The four children each have their own unique strengths and personalities when they first meet and they must learn to tolerate and combine those to work together on their secret mission. Without spoiling any of the story (hopefully) this is an adventure, but on a deeper level I thought it had a lot of wonderful messages about children, believing in yourself and others, the sense of belonging, the media, and most of all about friendship. The characters were delightful. There is some laugh-out loud humor, some mysteries to figure out (mostly in the form of riddles and poems) and a lot of suspense...and there just so happens to be a sequel!
