This book must be out of print which is a total bummer because my kids loved it. I checked on Amazon and the cheapest copy is a used collector's copy for almost $40. I borrowed my mom's copy and read it to my kids at our nightly 8 o'clock club. You know it's a good book when the kids say, "No! Don't stop there. Just one more chapter, please?!"
There's also no published description of this book but it's about a brother and sister who go to the east coast for a summer vacation. They meet another boy named Pug and build a raft together. Their raft comes loose from its moorings and they drift helplessly out to sea. They make it through a storm only to have their raft shattered on a small, rocky island. The island holds a few secrets, one of which is that it is sinking. The kids must fight for survival while holding out hope that they will be rescued, even though their families have no idea where they might be.
Like I said, my kids loved this book. It was suspenseful but not too scary for right before bedtime. The book is old enough that helicopters were a fairly recent invention and my kids couldn't believe that they didn't know what a helicopter was. Hopefully this book is available at local libraries because it's a great read for kids. Mine are ages 7-12. Even the 12-year-old got sucked in occasionally.
