I wanted to re-read this series this summer because I had such a strong reaction to Mockingjay when it first came out and I wondered if I'd been too hard on it. Originally, I felt like Mockingjay let the rest of the series down. I think I said that in the third book Katniss was not the same Katniss we came to know and love in the first two books. I think I also said that it was so anti-war it became unenjoyable.
This time around I'll just say this: I misjudged Mockingjay. Badly. While we root for Katniss because of her bravery and fighting spirit, this story is ultimately a tragedy on so many levels, especially for Peeta, who I believe is the real heart and soul of this story. That tragedy affected me deeply this time around. I get a little choked up just thinking about it. (I cry during certain commercials and Disney movies too.) This series is still a favorite, but for a very different reason now.
